Empowering Teachers to Shape the Future of AI in Education

The AIDEA – AI-Driven Educators Academy – project, launched in January 2026, aims to strengthen teacher training across Europe on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in school education. Supported by the Erasmus+ Teacher Academies action, the project aims to equip pre-service and in-service teachers with the skills needed to understand, use, and interact with AI in a critical, pedagogically meaningful, ethical, and inclusive manner.

As AI increasingly impacts teaching, learning, assessment, and school organization, European education systems face the urgent need to ensure educators are adequately prepared for this transformation. AIDEA addresses this challenge by establishing a transnational Academy that will develop and test an innovative, research-based, and practice-oriented training framework for teacher professional development in the field of AI.

The project brings together a multidisciplinary consortium from eight European countries, including higher education institutions, teacher training institutions, research centers, schools, and other key stakeholders in the education sector. Through this collaboration, AIDEA will design and validate a comprehensive training ecosystem that supports teachers in integrating AI into educational practice, while promoting critical awareness of the social, ethical, and regulatory dimensions of AI.

AIDEA is structured around three complementary strands of teacher skills development:

• Teaching AI, helping educators develop a basic understanding of AI concepts, systems, and implications;
• Teaching with AI, focusing on the pedagogically sound use of AI tools to improve teaching, learning and assessment;
• Teaching for AI, preparing students to participate responsibly and critically in a society shaped by AI.
• Within this framework, the project will deliver: a modular European training curriculum for AI in teacher education;
• open educational resources and practice-oriented teaching materials;
• an AI-powered digital learning hub to support access, collaboration, and knowledge exchange;
• pilot and validation activities involving teachers, trainee teachers, school leaders and students in different national contexts;
• mobility and peer-to-peer learning opportunities aimed at strengthening transnational cooperation and professional exchange among educators.

AIDEA addresses key issues, including fairness, transparency, bias, data protection, inclusion and human oversight, ensuring that technological innovation remains in line with European educational values and democratic principles and contributing to the responsible and trustworthy integration of AI in education.

Expected outcomes include increased AI literacy among teachers, increased institutional capacity within teacher education systems, improved pedagogical innovation in schools, and evidence-based recommendations to support policy. Through its activities, AIDEA aims to build a strong European community of educators capable of engaging with AI not only as users of new tools, but also as thoughtful practitioners and active contributors to the future of education.
